چکیده

Abnormalities in intestinal function associated with changes in meconium, which are usually discussed under the heading of meconium ileus, are responsible for many deaths in the newborn period. Disorders produced by meconium would seem to be largely due to intestinal obstruction due to the meconium being unusually tenacious and firm. The basic constituents of normal meconium have been known for 50 years (Zweifel, 1875; Lewin, 1900) and have recently been the subject of study by Rapoport and Buchanan (1950). We know, however, little of changes in composition of meconium related to the variation in its physical properties. Until more is known our treatment of diseases associated with abnormal meconium is likely to be arbitrary and unsatisfactory. The present study was undertaken in an attempt to determine some factors related to the tenacity of meconium. The features studied were 'surface tension', water content, tryptic activity and the nitrogen content of dried meconium.

Meconium aspiration syndrome in neonates

Perhaps the most significant changes in airway management over the recent years have been in the management of an infant delivered through meconium- stained amniotic fluid( MSAF). MSAF occurs in approximately 10℅ to 20℅ of all deliveries and increases to over 30℅ in deliveries after 42 weeks gestation. Meconium aspiration syndrome ( MAS) occurs in about 2℅ to 5℅ of these cases with a high morta...

THE PROPHYLACTIC EFFECT OF LACTULOSE ON NEONATAL HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA BY ACCELERATION OF MECONIUM PASSAGE

One of the causes of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is increased reabsorption of bilirubin from meconium in the gastrointestinal tract. This occurs when the conjugated bilirubin which is excreted into the colon is 'unconjugated by beta glucuronidase activity, present in the neonatal intestine, which hydrolyzes bilirubin diglucuronide into unconjugated bilirubin, which subsequently is reabsorbe...

Study of prognostic factors for meconium-stained amniotic fluid

Introduction: meconium is the thick, Green - Black, with a bad odor material,  that founded around the third month of pregnancy in the intestines of fetus. 8 to 15 percent of infants has the evidence of meconium stained fluid at birth. In this study the factors affecting maternal and neonatal meconium-stained amniotic fluid be examined. Methods: This study was done in the Vali-e- asr hospital ...

Study of the Relationship between Meconium Passage and Newborns Birth Weight and its related factors in Pregnant Women

Background: Previous studies have shown that meconium staining of the amniotic fluid may affect maternal and neonatal outcomes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between birth weight and meconium passage and its related factors in pregnant women.Materials and Methods: This matched case control study was conducted on a total of 200 newborns (100 as cases and 100 as controls...

Deoxyribonuclease in the treatment of purulent bronchitis.

In a previous paper Armstrong and White (1950) described studies on purulent bronchial and pleural exudates, showing that extracellular fibres of deoxyribonucleoprotein were responsible for much of their viscidity. Deoxyribonuclease prepared from beef pancreas destroyed these fibres and reduced the viscidity of the exudates both in vitro and in vivo. To determine whether this is of any practica...
